Army project, proposed in May by Bell Laboratoriesto develop a line-of-sight anti-aircraft missile system. The project delivered the United States' first operational anti-aircraft missile system, the Nike Ajaxin A great number of the technologies and rocket systems used for developing the Nike Ajax were re-used for a number of functions, many of which were given the "Nike" name after Nikethe goddess of victory from Greek mythology.
The missile's first-stage solid rocket booster became the basis for many types of rocket including the Nike Hercules missile and NASA 's Nike Smoke rocketused for upper-atmosphere research.
Project Nike began during when the War Department demanded a new air defense system to combat the new jet aircraftas existing gun-based systems proved largely incapable of dealing with the speeds and altitudes at which jet aircraft operated.
Two proposals were accepted. Bell Laboratories offered Project Nike.Attack on titan
At these speeds, even a supersonic rocket is no longer fast enough to be simply aimed at the target. The missile must "lead" the target to ensure the target is hit before the missile depletes its fuel.
This means that the missile and target cannot be tracked by a single radar, increasing the complexity of the system. One part was well developed. By this point, the US had considerable experience with lead-calculating analog computersstarting with the British Kerrison Predictor and a series of increasingly capable U. For Nike, three radars were used. The Missile Tracking Radar MTR tracked the missile by way of a transponderas the missile's radar signature alone was not sufficient. The MTR also commanded the missile by way of pulse-position modulationthe pulses were received, decoded and then amplified back for the MTR to track.
Once the tracking radars were locked the system was able to work automatically following launch, barring any unexpected occurrences. The computer compared the two radars' directions, along with information on the speeds and distances, to calculate the intercept point and steer the missile.
The entirety of this system was provided by the Bell System's electronics firm, Western Electric. The missile contained an unusual three part payloadwith explosive fragmentation charges at three points down the length of the missile to help ensure a lethal hit.
The missile's limited range was seen by critics as a serious flaw, because it often meant that the missile had to be situated very close to the area it was protecting.Imagine the kinetic energy in a place like that, packed with people tasked with that heavy responsibility.
Now imagine that same place, decades later, totally abandoned and empty. What odd ghosts might still haunt its vacant grounds? What sort of crumbling artifacts line its cracked floors? The launch site was established in Redmond, Washingtonin as the last line of defense against the Soviet threat during the Cold War. The base was decommissioned by the U. Army in and has been slowly decomposing ever since. Currently, the Lake Washington School District owns the site, but it remains largely abandoned.

They stored nuclear-tipped missiles that stood at the ready, some even in firing position for deployment. The Redmond site, and many others, were decommissioned in the mids as the technology and tactics of war changed. Now the historic site gets only a smattering of visitors, mostly graffiti artists or curious explorers who come to witness the spray can-painted messages written on crumbling posts and obsolete circuit boards beneath miscellaneous rubble.

Many were already on Army National Guard bases who continued to use the property. Others were offered to state and local governments while others were sold to school districts. The left-overs were offered to private individuals. Many Nike sites are now municipal yards, communications and FAA facilities, probation camps, and even renovated for use as Airsoft gaming and Military Simulation training complexes. Several were completely obliterated and turned into parks.
Some are now private residences. Only a few are intact and preserve the history of the Nike project. General Belgian Nike info: The Nike missile system was operational in the Belgian airforce from until It was onganized in a Missile Group the overall staffing ; a Support Wing tech and log support and 2 9th and 13th Missile Wings each with 4 subordinate units.
Their defending area was the industrial Ruhr area. As Greenland is Danish and that country refused to host foreign military and nuclear weapons, a bilateral agreement was signed allowing access for all US forces and weaponry in Greenland. This way all Thule batteries could yet be nuclear armed. It was part of the Nike-Belta defense system which was created to defend europe against the then newly invented jets.
The site fired Nike missiles at potentially incoming jets as part of the Project Nike. The Italian Nike units were initially combined Nike Ajax and Hercules equipped but switched completely over to Nike Hercules in the mid s. Each site with an US custodial detachment had an on-site load of 10 nuclear warheads ready to be launched at very short notice. The sites were using mixed warheads; meaning always 2 sections nuclear capable W31 20 kiloton yield and 1 section conventional T High Explosive armed.
These were supposed to be airlifted to certain Nike sites in case of deterioration of the international political situation in the world.
The logistics train was airlifting by US CH's within 6 hrs after receipt of a coded message. Battery 8,8th Battalion,3rd Air Defense Brigade was located on the Chinen peninsula in southern part of the island.

The missile sites are listed by the state in which they are located. The vast majority of the installations were combat ready launch facilities. Each site listing contains information concerning a particular site.
The site is located 25 miles northeast of Anchorage. The name of the site is Summit and it was within the Anchorage Defense Area. The branch of service involved was the United States Army and the dates of active service are taken from unit activation and deactivation records.
In the Nike system, the fire control site CS and launch site LS were considered separate individual sites when dealing with the properties. The Summit control and launch sites happen to have the same owner and condition; however, this is not always the case.
Many listings will have "FDS" following either the control site or launch site heading, which means that the site has gone through the "Formerly-Used Defense Site" program and has been transferred from DoD control to another party.
This party could be a private owner, a municipality, or the state. A current assessment of the site is provided and by clicking on the geographic coordinate will link to a map showing the site CS, LS and a current online aerial image. Nike missile operations continued there until when the site was closed. The sites around Fairbanks were inactivated in Its defenders included both Regular Army and National Guard units.
Sites SF and SF were deactivated in Three years later, the U. Army Air Defense Command deactivated the remaining missile batteries. Through the efforts of various volunteer groups, as ofthis is the only Nike site in the country that has been preserved and is open for public viewing. During the late s and early s, the Travis battalion assumed responsibility for the remaining active batteries guarding the entire San Francisco region.
Inactivated by Headquarters facilities were located in Bridgeport. This battery would become integrated into the New England Defense Area before being deactivated in Units from the Bridgeport Defense Area assisted in operating the Plainville site.During the tense years of the Cold War, from tothe United States Army built and operated close to Nike missile sites in the United States.
These sites were designed as the last line of defense against Soviet bombers. Today, a dedicated group of volunteers works in partnership with the Golden Gate National Recreation Area on the continuous task of restoration at site SFL, the only fully restored Nike missile site in the country. This museum is an enduring reminder of the Cold War and allows visitors to reflect upon the realities of the Cold War and their influence on today's society.

Nike Missile History. Public Transit. Last updated: September 29, Four decades ago, when Soviet Premier Nikita S.Cars under r10000 in vereeniging
Khrushchev promised to bury the West and thousands of Americans stocked backyard bomb shelters with canned goods, soldiers dug a formidable missile defense system in the fields outside America's cities.
In the Baltimore-Washington area, the mostly underground forts, silos for powerful Nike missiles, were built in a ragged circle or "ring of steel" in places such as Towson, Davidsonville, Rockville, Waldorf and Chestertown. Now, the era when schoolchildren practiced duck-and-cover drills is a distant memory, and Nike bases around the nation are being transformed into community centers, parks, homeless shelters and prisons.
In Anne Arundel County, residents have proposed building a hockey rink on a former base near the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. It's a sign of changed times that at a Nike site-turned-museum in the Marin headlands of Northern California, the most frequently asked question by children is: "Why was a missile named after a tennis shoe? The Nike missiles, named for the Greek goddess of victory, were such a secret in the Cold War days of the s and s that details about them and the nuclear warheads they carried are only now beginning to emerge.Bioskop online box office
The secret of the nuclear warheads was declassified by the late s. But the Pentagon's official position is that they never existed. Tom Buckingham said recently when asked whether the missiles carried nuclear warheads. Buckingham has been assigned by the Defense Department to handle the transfer to civilian hands of the acre former Nike site near the Bay Bridge.
Those left of the hundred or so men who staffed the Maryland sites 24 hours a day, poised to launch a missile less than five seconds after word of an enemy attack, remain intensely proud of their work. They kept the secret, even from their wives, they say, that these missiles were the nuclear terror the country feared so.
Designed in extreme secrecy inthe Nike missile was quietly turned into a defensive nuclear weapon in to intercept enemy aircraft loaded with nuclear bombs before they reached the United States. It was renamed the Nike Hercules.
But most who worked at the sites say it would have saved few lives. Any nuclear explosion in the hemisphere would have resulted in the agonizingly slow death of masses from radiation. But in the late '50s, when a nation rattled by Soviet power was holding air raid drills, generals thought that if they could intercept enemy aircraft far enough out over the Atlantic, Baltimore and Washington might survive.
Servicemen who maintained the Nikes say they would have become obsolete soon -- even without SALT -- because of new weapons launched from enemy nations that could not be shot down.
There was no tolerance for mediocrity. And there was a great deal of pride in knowing that. In addition to the dome-covered silos, the sites had a control center, barracks, administrative offices and a ball field or two for off-hours entertainment in the middle of nowhere. Within a few years, the postwar march to the suburbs brought new housing developments within yards of their perimeter fences.
Even then, most neighbors were only dimly aware of what was behind the three layers of barbed wire fences, German shepherds trained to kill and armed guards pacing the lots. Residents remember hearing a daily siren and seeing the missile poke through the top of a cement dome. They put up a fuss about everything today. At several of the sites in the late s, Army and National Guard personnel held mini-open houses to try to answer neighbors' questions about those late-night sirens and sudden bursts of activity.
People asked anyway. You just made up something. But they were very real, and they worked.
Degatina agreed. We had more power [in the Baltimore-Washington area] than could ever be used in wartime, even today. Now, federal law requires that surplus property turned over to local governments free must be put to community use.
The military wasn't always so generous. The Defense Department held onto many of the sites nationwide until the s, when officials tried unsuccessfully to sell them. The launchers are half a mile down the hill, locked and are apparently used for fire training. The control site, on the other hand…I went on into Jax and started my usual square search, which included a stop at a gas station.
However, one even older gentleman followed me out and gave me directions to the remnants of BAC. Oh well…. Towson — According to my Baltimore area map, the armory is located at the corner of Joppa Blvd and York Rd, about six hundred yards south of the I interchange. Immediately south of the cloverleaf on the east side of York is General Harry C. The primary orga assigned is the 29 th Division Support command. From photographs in the lobby, it is apparent that this is a newer facility which replaced something…on the same site?

The other structures I found? The world wonder 20 Apr BA Fork — Up the hill, down the hill. Call this one an "O," for obliterated. The site is pretty beat up but appears to be intact and is privately owned by a mix of people, dogs and horses. I took a couple of photos from outside the gate and pressed on. BA was a launcher site with 12 converted to Hercules.
The control fac is on MD 21 just past the intersection and is intact with all buildings and radar plats. The gates were locked but I was able to get a few shots over and through the fence. Apparently it belongs to Kent County.
Groan…I went back up, prowled back and forth and determined that current access to the road was through the locked control site. The fort was built in and fitted with two batteries: Hartshorne 2x6-in and Sykes 2x3-in.
The post was transferred to Baltimore in for use as a city park. Hartshorne is still standing, looking more like a long concrete building without any earthen protection. A few small supply buildings stand nearby, as well as what appears to be the former headquarters building.
Otherwise, recreational use abounds. BA Granite — The control site is. The sign at the gate states that there are careers with a future in the Maryland Guard, 70th General Support Company. The launch fac is. After I returned home and dug out the reference I learned that this was a double site with 24 launchers, 16 modified for Hercules between March and February BA Cronhardt — Oh my, this one took some doing.
